Ceasefire (2017)

In the raw aftermath of the 1920s, Georges Laffont, profoundly scarred by the grotesque theatre of trench warfare, resolves to escape his past by venturing into the expansive territories of West Africa's Upper Volta. Accompanied by Diofo, a fellow survivor of the Great War and a gifted griot, Georges traverses from one village to another, exploiting Diofo's artistic prowess to enlist villagers for labour on the plantations of Ghana. Yet, this odyssey leads him to a cul-de-sac of despair, compelling him to return to Nantes, where his war-disabled brother Marcel and their mother have been eking out an existence in his absence. As Europe moves on in the wake of war, Georges is left grappling to rediscover his role in a world that has seemingly forgotten him. With the support of Helene, a compassionate sign language teacher entangled in a stormy relationship with him, and the family he once abandoned, Georges embarks on a quest to mend the deep-seated wounds of his past. His journey of redemption portrays the poignant struggle of a war veteran seeking solace and acceptance in a rapidly changing world.
