Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist (2005)

Father Lankester Merrin, a once devout Roman Catholic priest, finds himself in the heart of Northern Kenya, years after a haunting incident in Nazi-occupied Holland that tore his faith apart. Now an archaeologist, Merrin, burdened by his past and detached from his vocation, presides over a perplexing archaeological excavation - a nearly intact Byzantine church, a structure that defies time and history, its creation predating the arrival of Christianity in the region. As the church, previously buried to its rooftop in sand, gradually reveals its structure, an eerie madness descends upon the excavation camp. The local tribesmen, disturbed and fearful, demand the church be reburied, while two British soldiers meet a gruesome fate, their commanding officer, Major Granville, impulsively resorting to violence against a harmless local. Beneath the escalating fear and tension, a chilling truth emerges - the church harbors an unearthly evil. A young disabled boy, Cheche, shows alarming signs of possession, becoming the unwitting conduit for the malevolent spirit that lurks within the ancient structure. Merrin, along with the earnest young priest, Father Francis, and the pragmatic Dr. Rachel Lesno, must grapple with the reality of this unfolding horror. As the spirit's stranglehold tightens, Merrin's skeptical shield of unbelief is put to the test. Innocents fall prey to the unearthly force, and the once-lost priest must confront the dominion of the demonic entity that threatens them all. Will this terrifying ordeal lead Merrin to the rediscovery of his abandoned faith, or will it further entrench his skepticism?
