Plot

In the dawning years of the 20th century, Lucia, a vibrant twenty-year-old, finds herself tethered to the pastoral beauty of Capri, an enchanting island in Italy. Her days are consumed by the care of her family's goat herds, a monotonous existence punctuated by the silence of her mother and the ailing health of her father. The weight of tradition, like an oppressive cloak, is draped around her by her brothers, the staunch defenders of their way of life. When her father's death forces Lucia into an unwanted betrothal to a wealthy widower, orchestrated by her pragmatic elder brother for the family's financial survival, Lucia finds unexpected solace within a commune of young Northern European artists. These 'devils', as the locals dub them, have sought the idyllic refuge of Capri to embrace their alternative lifestyle and pursue their art, unfettered by societal norms. Under the charismatic leadership of the painter Seybu, Lucia discovers an intoxicating world of liberation, learning, and linguistics, a stark contrast to her former life. Seybu's charm ensnares her heart, drawing her into a world where art flourishes. Yet, the island's young doctor, Carlo, with his scientific mind and pragmatic approach to life, vies for her affections, thrusting Lucia into a fierce duel between art and science, tradition and revolution. However, as the passions and rivalries grow tedious, Lucia yearns for the simple joy of dancing in the woods, torn between the allure of the new and the comfort of the old. As Italy teeters on the brink of war in 1914, Lucia's journey mirrors the nation's struggle, a dance between the past and the future, on the unique stage of Capri.
