Lee Israel's notable skill at writing biographies of famous people has earned her great acclaim, but her comparatively old-fashioned sensibilities are starting to fall out of style by the 1990s. With her publishers uninterested in her pitches, she settles on a more lucrative — if highly illegal — alternative. She'll leverage her intimate understanding of the famous women she knows so well to create authentic forgeries of their correspondence. Soon her scheme has gotten out of control, and she's concocting dramatic secret lives for these women that are pulling in large sums of money. But the more greedy she gets, the more likely her scam is going to come crashing down around her.
