Plot

In the affluent suburb of Hillsborough, just beyond the vibrant pulse of San Francisco, blind-from-birth Don Baker yearns for independence from his overbearing widowed mother, Florence. Raised in the cocoon of an upper-middle-class household, Don's life takes a transformative turn when he meets his first serious girlfriend, Linda Fletcher, whose unwavering faith in him kindles a newfound self-confidence within Don. He dares to dream of a life away from his mother's meticulous scrutiny, and under an agreement of a two-month trial period, he steps into the bustling city of San Francisco to live on his own. However, a month into this trial, Linda exits from Don's life, leaving him alone in his newfound independence. It is then that an unexpected breath of fresh air sweeps into his life - the free-spirited and offbeat nineteen-year-old Jill Tanner, who moves into the apartment next door. A quick rapport blossoms between the two, leading to an unlocked door that bridges their worlds. Jill, with her non-committal nature shaped by a six-day marriage at the tender age of sixteen, agrees to embark on a journey of fun and freedom with Don. As their relationship evolves, it hints at a deeper connection, one that challenges Jill's commitment-shy tendencies. This period of exhilarating independence is disrupted by Florence's untimely visit, against their prior agreement, her judgmental gaze now focused on Don's apartment, his unconventional surroundings, and the unpredictable Jill. She finds herself at odds with Jill's lifestyle, sparking tension in their collective lives. Yet, a private conversation between Jill and Florence might hold the potential to shift their perspectives, leading them to a new understanding of what it means to grow up, to be free, and to truly live. This heartwarming tale explores the complexities of familial bonds, the exhilaration of independence, and the power of unexpected friendships, all set against the backdrop of a city that thrives on its own rhythm.
