Plot

In the heart of Iowa, the humble yet talented Bob Pickler reigns supreme as a renowned butter sculptor. For 15 consecutive years, Bob has astoundingly won the state's Mastery in Butter carving championship, transforming ordinary blocks of butter into extraordinary works of art. His wife, the ambitious and egotistical Laura Pickler, rides the wave of Bob's local fame to make her mark in politics, setting her sights on the governor's seat and possibly, the White House. However, when the event organizers kindly ask Bob to step aside, giving others a chance at butter glory, Laura's aspirations seem to melt away like butter in the sun. Unwilling to let the Pickler legacy fade, Laura decides to step into the competitive ring herself, hoping to intimidate any fresh faces with her steely determination. Unexpectedly, she finds herself up against Destiny, a 10-year-old African-American foster child with an uncertain past. Having bounced from one foster home to another, Destiny's life has been anything but stable, her talent unacknowledged. Yet, when she lays her eyes on Bob's 15th winning butter sculpture, a life-sized reimagining of the Last Supper, a spark ignites within her. Destiny emerges as a formidable contender, carving from the heart, her creations echoing her resilience and spirit. As the competition intensifies, Laura, driven by desperation, resorts to underhanded tactics in a bid to outdo her young rival. Meanwhile, Brooke, a bike-riding prostitute with a grudge against the Picklers, particularly Laura, becomes an unexpected player in this buttery drama. As the state fair approaches, the tension thickens like heavy cream, with Laura's stepdaughter, Destiny's well-intentioned yet overly "white" foster parents, and Laura's old flame Boyd all adding to the mix. Amidst the chaos, the once quiet and unassuming world of butter carving becomes a hotbed of intrigue, ambition, and unexpected talent. In this world, nothing is as smooth as it seems, and everyone has a stake in the butter.
