Plot

In the quaint and tranquil confines of Brown Valley, Wisconsin, resides Tim Lippe, a man whose life is as uneventful as the town itself. His world, steeped in simplicity, revolves around his job as an insurance salesman at Brown Star Insurance, his weekly romantic encounters with his 7th-grade teacher-turned-divorcee, Macy Vanderhei, and the comfort of familiarity with his small-town life. Tim's naïveté is reflected in his belief that his job is an altruistic endeavor, and his affair with Macy is a manifestation of mutual love. Brown Star Insurance, celebrated for its hat-trick victory at the American Society of Mutual Insurers' (ASMI) Two-Diamond award, owes its success to its prodigious representative, Roger Lemke. But when Roger's untimely and mysterious demise threatens the company's reputation and award streak, Tim is thrust into the limelight to represent Brown Star at the annual ASMI convention in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, a metropolis far beyond his comprehension. Stepping into Cedar Rapids with his vintage American Tourister and money belt, Tim, the quintessential small-town man, finds himself in a world that challenges his provincial outlook. From his seasoned and worldly roommates, Ronald Wilkes and Dean Ziegler, to the enchanting Nebraskan insurance agent, Joan Ostrowski-Fox, and Bree, a young woman loitering in the hotel parking lot whose occupation as a hooker eludes Tim's innocent perception, Cedar Rapids is an eye-opening whirlwind. The convention unravels a world of corporate corruption that disheartens Tim, and the seduction of the big city life pulls him into an urban jungle he's only ever seen through the screen. As Tim navigates the labyrinth of this newfound reality, he must make decisions that could ultimately alter his life and the fate of Brown Star Insurance. Amidst the turmoil, Tim finds his own untarnished way to turn his topsy-turvy life around, shedding light on his capacity to adapt and his unyielding spirit to triumph against odds.
