Butch and Sundance: The Early Days (1979)

In the rugged expanse of the late 19th-century American frontier, the unlikely alliance between outlaws Robert LeRoy Parker and Harry Alonzo Longabaugh, famously known as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, takes root. Freshly paroled from a Wyoming prison, the affable Butch Cassidy, a man of honor despite his criminal proclivities, returns to his former haunt—Brown's Hole, Utah. Here, fate intertwines him with Longabaugh during a botched casino shootout instigated by the latter. Despite Longabaugh's youthful countenance and volatile temperament, Butch, struck by his exceptional marksmanship, persuades him into a mutually beneficial partnership. Renaming him the Sundance Kid, Butch envisages a union where he provides the strategy and Sundance, the firepower. Yet, their ambitions diverge. Butch, lured by the allure of fame but striving to abandon his life of crime for his wife Mary and their two sons, contrasts sharply with Sundance, who is eager to plunge deeper into a life of lucrative lawlessness. In a paradox of desires, they agree to commence their partnership with minor heists, aspiring to eventually escalate to more rewarding train robberies. But the ghosts of their past misdeeds are never far behind, with old foes and former accomplices on their trail. As they navigate this treacherous balance between their criminal pursuits and personal lives, Butch and Sundance must discover if their partnership holds a future amidst the unforgiving lawlessness of the Wild West.
