Plot

In the politically charged landscape of Budapest, 1936, a seasoned reporter, Zsigmond Gordon, finds himself drawn into the shadows of a city on the brink. A young, beautiful girl, a mere pawn in the grand scheme of life, is found brutally murdered and discarded in a forsaken courtyard. Amid the city's preparations to align with Hitler's domineering reign, her death is deemed insignificant by most. Yet, Gordon, a journalist with a nose for the concealed truth and an insatiable curiosity, senses a deeper darkness at play. As the city mourns the passing of its fascist-leaning Prime Minister, Gyula Gömbös, Gordon seizes the opportunity to delve into the grim underbelly of Budapest. His quest for truth takes him through a labyrinth of deceit and vice, teeming with all-night 'smokers', scheming pornographers, shadowy crime syndicates, and covert communist cells. The dimly lit brothels and bustling boxing rings serve as the backdrop to a society ensnared in power plays and political machinations. The threads of the mystery lead him to the doorstep of one of Hungary's most influential business figures, a man poised to amass a fortune through his political ties to Germany. However, a secret threatens to topple his empire - his Jewish heritage. As Gordon navigates the treacherous waters of power, deceit, and vice, he finds himself in a race against time to unravel the truth behind the young girl's death, potentially exposing a network of secrets that could shake the very foundation of a city readying for war.
