In the heart of Auckland, a Croatian refugee family is tightly bound under the iron fist of Ivan, their domineering patriarch. His daughter, Nina, yearns for independence and a life beyond her father's shadow. She finds solace and love in Eddie, a passionate Maori cook who works alongside her in a bustling restaurant. When an opportunity arises for Nina to secure financial freedom, she reluctantly accepts a proposal from a Chinese co-worker, enabling him and his wife to gain permanent residency. This financial windfall allows Nina to break free from her oppressive family home and start a new life with Eddie. However, the undercurrents of her decision ripple outwards, causing Eddie to confront the wrath of Ivan and the unyielding bond of Nina's family. As complications bubble to the surface, the strength of their love and desire for freedom is tested in the face of her father's anger and family loyalties.
