Plot

In the heart of the Houston Astrodome, a fascinating character named Brewster McCloud resides, hidden within the cold confines of a fallout room. This young, owlish intellectual harbors a dream as vast as the dome itself: to take flight, soaring above the earthly limitations. His secret dwelling and eccentric ambition are known only to Hope, a health food store clerk, who becomes his silent accomplice, providing him with the necessities of life. Always lurking on the periphery, an overweight security guard, suspicious of Brewster's constant presence yet unable to catch him, adds a hint of mystery. Adding to the intrigue, Brewster is shielded by an enigmatic guardian angel, a trench coat-clad, Gremlin-driving figure, who guides him towards their shared goal, albeit under her stringent rules. The plot takes an interesting turn when Brewster crosses paths with Suzanne Davis, a part-time race car driver and the dome's newly appointed tour guide. As she begins to fall for Brewster, she remains oblivious to his peculiar lifestyle and lofty aspirations. Simultaneously, the city of Houston is gripped by fear as a series of unsolved strangulation murders plague the wealthy community. The city's elite, led by Haskell Weeks, fund the arrival of celebrated San Francisco detective, Frank Shaft. He joins the investigation, employing unconventional methods and focusing on a peculiar clue overlooked by others: bird droppings found on each victim. His unique approach clashes with the traditional strategies of the lead investigator, Captain Crandall, creating a riveting subplot. As Brewster forges ahead with his flight plan, the city's turmoil unfolds around him. The day of reckoning finally arrives as Brewster steps into the dome with his whimsical bird wings, the police closing in. The narrative weaves expert commentary on the behavior of Brewster and those ensnared in his intriguing tale, making 'Brewster McCloud' a tale of dreams, mystery, and human eccentricities. Will Brewster evade capture and realize his dream of flight, or will his wings be clipped before they ever have the chance to spread?
