Boy (2010)

As the year 1984 paints its final strokes on the canvas of the small Maori settlement of Raukokore, New Zealand, we find ourselves immersed in the world of a preteen named Alamein Ranginui, referred to affectionately as Boy. With his mother claimed by childbirth years ago and his father, Alamein Sr., a distant memory behind bars, Boy resides under the nurturing care of his paternal grandmother, Nan. His companions in this quaint dwelling are his seven-year-old brother, Rocky, who harbours a belief in his own magical powers, a humble goat, and a host of cousins. Boy, a spirited dreamer, often finds refuge in his vivid fantasies about his father and his adoration for the iconic Michael Jackson. His heart also throbs for a classmate, the enchanting Chardonnay. However, Boy's life takes an unexpected turn when Nan departs for a funeral, leaving him in charge of their home and its inhabitants. The tranquility of their lives is disrupted when Alamein Sr., now a free man, resurfaces unexpectedly, accompanied by his friends Juju and Chuppa. Boy, having nurtured an idealised vision of his father, welcomes the trio with unbridled enthusiasm, planning a familial reunion with his brother and their prodigal father. Alamein Sr.'s quest for 'buried treasure', the loot from a forgotten robbery, feeds Boy's dreams of a prosperous life together. As the plot unfolds, Boy's idyllic dreams and harsh realities collide, forcing him to reconcile his imagined heroic father with the flawed man standing before him. This poignant tale of innocence, dreams, and the complexities of family ties, navigates the turbulent waters of Boy's journey towards the truth, testing the strength of his dreams and the value he places on them. Amidst all this, a goat makes its timely appearance, adding a touch of whimsy to this captivating narrative.
