Blind Chance (1987)

Set in the turbulence of 1981 Poland, we follow the journey of Wietold Dlugosz, a medical student grappling with the loss of his father and his own uncertainties about his chosen path. Requesting a year off from the university to reassess his commitment to medicine, Wietold's life takes a fateful turn at a train station, branching into three potential realities. In the first, Witek manages to catch the train to Warsaw, reuniting with his old flame Czuszka, a part of the Anti-Communist underground movement. After a dramatic episode involving the rescue of protest hostages, he finds himself drawn to the Party. In the second reality, Witek's attempt to chase the train leads to a run-in with a station guard, resulting in a court trial and a sentence of community service. He becomes embroiled in an underground student movement against the oppressive system, escaping arrest while his fellow activists are taken. A romantic entanglement with a childhood friend's sister and the suspicion of betrayal from his comrades add further complications to his life. The third possibility sees Witek miss the train, leading him back to the university to finish his medicine degree. He marries his sweetheart, Olga, and together they navigate their way to success in their medical careers. A trip to Paris to present a disgraced dean's lecture presents Witek with a new set of challenges. Blind Chance paints a portrait of one man's life, fractured into three possible paths by a single missed train. Each path, though drastically different, fails to bring Witek the happiness he seeks, presenting a complex exploration of fate, choice, and consequence.
