Plot

As the 1920s dawn over the arid desert straddling the Texas-Mexico border, Charley Eagle (Anthony Quinn), a resilient Indian rancher, tames the harsh terrain, nurturing dreams as rugged as the land he owns. He's placing his bets on "Black Hope," a horse he believes carries the speed and spirit to conquer the esteemed Kentucky Derby. Charley's simple life is shaken when he crosses paths with David Chung ('Ducky' Louie), a young Chinese boy left orphaned by the brutal machinations of a smuggling gang. Charley's heart, as vast as his desert home, compels him to take the boy under his wing, where along with his wife, Sarah (Katherine DeMille), they form an unconventional family on their modest ranch. Life, however, has a way of derailing dreams. Charley's hopes for "Black Hope" falter, but the discovery of oil on his land ignites a new aspiration. The birth of "Black Gold," the offspring of "Black Hope," rekindles Charley's dream. He believes that "Black Gold" can achieve what his sire couldn't - a victory that would echo beyond the ranch, into the grandstands of the Kentucky Derby. This tale, set against the backdrop of the early 20th century, was inspired by the 1924 Kentucky Derby champion, "Black Gold." As it unravels, viewers are plunged into a story of hope, ambition, and the relentless pursuit of dreams, no matter how elusive they may seem.
