Plot

In the aftermath of an early-life tragedy, teenage Morrie is thrust into unexpected adulthood, inheriting a house, a cranky digestive system, and the responsibility of his younger siblings, Jay and Ida. Fast forward two decades, and the repercussions of this unplanned parenthood are evident. Jay, a societal misfit, finds himself wounded and homeless. Ida, a free spirit, floats from one jobless day to the next, seeking solace in the arms of strangers. Morrie, trapped in a marriage with the endlessly patient Betty, yearns for tenure before they consider parenthood. The trio's unconventional existence continuously irks their self-righteous neighbors, including Morrie's condescending department head. In an attempt to reclaim some normalcy, Morrie invites Jay back into their childhood home to convalesce. Ida, sensing a family reunion, also decides to drop in. Their presence sends tremors through the quiet suburb, unsettling the neighbors and drawing the unwanted attention of law enforcement towards Jay. Meanwhile, Morrie's irritable bowel syndrome lurks in the background, much like the unresolved issues plaguing their lives. As a mysterious woman comes calling and the police circle closer, Birds of America paints a poignant, often humorous, portrait of a family trying to navigate societal norms while grappling with their personal demons. Each character is a bird, free yet lost, striving to find their place in the world.
