Plot

Caught in the gray drudgery of his job at a North Country undertaker's office, young British clerk Billy (Tom Courtenay) finds himself besieged by the seductive media message that everything he could ever desire is within arm's reach. Yet, the stark contrast between this tantalizing promise and his monotonous reality prompts Billy to escape into his vibrant imagination. In the fantastical realm of "Ambrosia," he is a king, a general, and a lover; a hero of his own making, tailored to fit the whims of his desires. Billy's inability to reconcile his grand dreams with his mundane life leads to a series of increasingly complicated predicaments. He's juggling commitments to two fiancées, even as his heart secretly pines for a third woman, the enigmatic Liz (Julie Christie). Meanwhile, he finds himself in a financial bind, having misappropriated his employer's funds for personal indulgences. And his lofty ambition of becoming a successful, well-known scriptwriter in London teeters on the brink of collapse. Only Liz seems able to tether Billy to reality, but even she struggles against his persistent fantasies. Eventually, Billy manages to piece his life together enough to plan a departure for London with Liz. However, the harsh realities of the world continue to elude him. A simple act of buying milk results in him missing the train to London—with Liz onboard. In the end, Billy retreats to the comforting familiarity of his parents' home and the idyllic landscapes of Ambrosia that exist solely within his imagination. The film, thus, explores the poignant tension between the allure of dreams and the inescapable realities of life.
