Plot

Set amidst the verdant hills of Kalpetta Township in Kerala, India, during the waning days of the British Raj, "Before the Rains" follows the intertwined lives of characters bound by tradition, desire, and colonialism. As children, T.K. Neelan (Rahul Bose), Rajat (Lal), Manas (Indrajith Sukumaran) and his sister Sajani (Nandita Das), would immerse themselves in mythological play, with the lush woods as their theatrical backdrop. Fast forward to 1937. Manas labors hard, Sajani is wedded to Rajat, and T.K. serves the British master, Henry Moores (Linus Roache), who resides with his wife, Laura (Jennifer Ehle), and their son, Peter (Leopold Benedict), in the heart of Kerala. Sajani, too, finds herself in the throes of servitude in the Moores household. A fervent advocate of the British rule, T.K. is sought by his headmaster to join the freedom movement, to urge the British to leave India. T.K., however, sees the colonial rule as a partnership that has propelled India's progress. His headmaster warns him of the asymmetry in this supposed partnership, but T.K. shrugs it off. It is not until he discovers the clandestine affair between Henry and Sajani, that he is forced to reassess his perspective on the dynamics of power, loyalty, and love. "Before the Rains" is a tapestry of personal and political struggles, a tale of complex relationships that are as unpredictable as the monsoons of Kerala.
