Plot

In the tumultuous aftermath of British Rule in India, a noble family finds itself at the heart of an impending revolution. The family, presided over by the venerable Bade Thakur (Shammi Kapoor), is comprised of three distinctive sons: the tradition-bound Devan (Vijayendra Ghatge), the progressive Vikram Singh (Vinod Khanna), and a third son who serves as a Police Officer (Mohsin Khan). Devan, deeply unsettled by the winds of change sweeping across India, resents the dwindling supremacy of princely families and zamindars. His brothers, however, embrace the transformation with open arms, with Vikram even forging an unlikely friendship with a humble peasant, Sumer Singh (Dharmendra). As the tides of time surge, the bond between the two friends is put to the test, while the family is faced with a potential division of their ancestral estate. The escalating tensions threaten to fracture the once-solid relationships within the family and challenge the enduring friendship of Sumer and Vikram. In this milieu of shifting loyalties and societal upheaval, the question remains: how will these dramatic changes affect the familial ties and friendships? And what will be the lasting impact on the noble family's legacy and the enduring bond between Sumer and Vikram? Batwara (1989) is a poignant exploration of tradition, change, and the complex dynamics of family and friendship against the backdrop of a nation in transition.
