Plot

Set in the poignant backdrop of post-atomic Hiroshima, "Barefoot Gen 2" continues the stirring tale of Keiji Nakazawa, a young survivor navigating the ruins of his once vibrant city. Thrust into a world of tragedy and despair after losing his father, sister and younger brother to the atomic inferno, Gen finds himself the unlikely patriarch of a diminished family, striving to provide for his mother and baby sister, whose first breath coincided with the city's last. In the heart of the city's debris, Gen crosses paths with a group of orphans, among whom he spots a startling resemblance to his lost brother. This discovery rekindles a glimmer of hope in his heart - could his brother have possibly survived the devastation? Three years after the cataclysm, the city is ravaged once again, this time by a furious typhoon that leaves the orphans' shelter in irreparable ruins. Amidst the destruction, Gen's spirit remains unbroken. He resolves to aid his newfound family, spearheading the construction of a new haven on a forsaken tract of land. Among the orphans, he encounters a child disfigured by the cruel touch of radiation - a grim reminder of the city's past. Gen, however, extends a hand of friendship and hope, igniting courage within the child's scarred heart. Yet, as he battles the adversities of the external world, a personal tragedy looms - his mother's life hangs by a thread, with only four months left to live. "Barefoot Gen 2" is a poignant story of resilience, hope and the unyielding spirit of humanity in the face of unimaginable hardship, where love and encouragement serve as the ultimate survival tools.
