Plot

In the heart of 1993, an enigmatic conversation unfolds on a dimly lit stage. Middle-aged actress Barbara Windsor, now a reverberating name in the industry, engages in a heartfelt discourse with John Deeks - her long-gone father, a ghost from her past who had once recognized her nascent talent but vanished from her life post her parents' bitter divorce. Her mother, a pivotal character, gifts her with the stage name that would eventually echo in theatre halls. Barbara's journey is one of highs and lows, as she pivots from a stage school to the mesmerizing jazz tunes at Ronnie Scott's club. Here, she stumbles upon Ronnie Knight, a man as charming as he is dishonest, leading her down a challenging path that sees her as a pregnant prisoner's wife, haunted by the need for an abortion. Fortune smiles upon her as she becomes a part of Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop, scoring a role in Lionel Bart's acclaimed play, 'Fings Ain't Wot They Used to Be'. Film and television roles trickle in, including the unforgettable 'Carry On' franchise. Despite Joan's forewarning of a potential typecast as the eternally dim-witted blonde, Barbara strategically leverages this persona, transforming it into her signature style. Aided by her youthful and handsome husband, Barbara ascends to the status of a national treasure, smartly exploiting her image while navigating the tumultuous seas of showbiz. 'Babs' is a compelling tale of resilience, talent, and the audacity to turn odds into opportunities, encapsulating the life of an iconic figure who dared to defy norms in the pursuit of her dreams.
