Autumn Sonata (1978)

In the wake of her long-term partner Leonardo's death, the globally acclaimed concert pianist Charlotte, accedes to an invitation from her estranged daughter, Eva. Eva, a former journalist turned devoted wife to her minister husband Viktor, lives in a quiet country home, a refuge from her mother's world of fame and music. Accepting Eva's offer of an extended stay, Charlotte steps into a reunion filled with simmering tensions and buried secrets, meeting not just Eva, but also her other daughter, Helena, after seven long years. Helena, mentally disabled and once confined within the walls of an institution at Charlotte's behest, now finds solace under Eva's loving care. This decision to look after Helena sprouted from an attempt to fill the void left by the tragic accidental drowning of Eva's four-year-old son, Erik. Unlike Charlotte, who seems unsettled by Helena's presence, Eva cherishes her sister's company, a living reminder of Erik's memory. As the days unfold, Eva is reminded of her childhood resentments towards her mother, a woman she perceives as calculated, her every action a move in a grander scheme. These deep-seated feelings, intertwined with her unresolved grief, have shaped her into the desolate person she is today, casting shadows over her marital life.
