Plot

Set against the backdrop of 1950s Baltimore, Aunt Mary spins a remarkable tale of a resilient woman navigating through her personal adversities while striving to uplift the troubled youth of her community. As the St. Louis Browns transform into the Orioles, we're introduced to Mary Dobkin, a spirited woman grappling with a physical disability, yet brimming with an unquenchable love for baseball. Mary's conviction leads her to form a unique baseball team, a motley crew of street kids, aiming to steer them away from juvenile delinquency. Her team is a symbol of unity, a blend of black and white children, an aspect that stirs conflict with the conservative authorities of the time. The narrative takes an emotional turn when Mary, having already lost part of a foot, faces the terrifying prospect of losing half of her other leg. Her coaching future flickers uncertainly as the 1955 season looms. However, her spirit is revitalized by a young boy in her hospital, who, despite losing an entire arm, is determined to master the sport with his remaining limb. Inspired by his courage, Mary soldiers on, even introducing a girl into her outfield, a move as groundbreaking as it is controversial. As a testament to the hundreds of lives she's touched, a baseball field in Baltimore is christened in her honor. Aunt Mary is a stirring chronicle of resilience, acceptance, and the power of sport to unite and inspire.
