In the unforgiving steppes of Asia, the king of the Huns breathes his last, leaving a power vacuum in his fierce empire. Meanwhile, in the heart of the Roman Empire, the weakling emperor Valentinianus is but a puppet, his strings pulled by the real ruler, his mother Galla Placidia, a widow with a barbarian king for a late husband. The Roman general Aethius, a man who bears intimate knowledge of the Huns through past hostage exchanges, strives for peace, bartering a fragile truce that demands a doubled tribute.
However, the Roman court, nestled in the northern city of Ravenna, rebuffs these terms, imprisoning Aethius. The emperor's ambitious sister, Honoria, sees opportunity in chaos, offering her hand and the empire as a dowry to Attila, aligning with Bleda's hidden hopes.
Scorning the idea of peace, Attila orchestrates his brother Bleda's murder and rouses the hordes to march on the Roman Empire. As the terrified Valentinian mourns his beloved pet cheetah, Galla Placidia reinstates Aethius to mount a desperate defense against the incoming onslaught.
