Plot

In the heart of the 19th-century British maritime industry, a tale of ambition, rivalry, and love unfurls as the MacIver brothers, proprietors of a shipyard in bustling Liverpool, face the sinking of their state-of-the-art steamship, the "Gigantic," mere minutes after its launch. The disaster propels the brothers on diverging paths, bound by their shared dreams but divided by their methods. David MacIver (Griffith Jones), pragmatic and business-oriented, seeks to salvage their company's future by aligning with erstwhile rivals, shying away from the risky venture of steamships. His brother, the visionary Charles MacIver (Sir Michael Redgrave), chooses to brave the perilous journey to America on a doomed ship. His mission? To gain the trust and partnership of Samuel Cunard (Hartley Power) and establish the first fleet of steamships to traverse the Atlantic. Their individual quests are further complicated by love, as both brothers find themselves captivated by the enchanting Mary (Valerie Hobson), the daughter of one of their financial backers. The MacIver brothers' bond is tested as they vie for the coveted mail contract from the British government and Mary's affections. "Atlantic Ferry" (1941) is a riveting saga set against the backdrop of fierce rivalries between the major British ports of Liverpool and Glasgow. It's a tale that celebrates the indomitable spirit that bridged the Atlantic, forging an enduring alliance between Britain and the United States, and forever altering the course of maritime history.
