At Gunpoint (1955)

In the tranquil, unsuspecting town of Plainview, Texas, the serenity is shattered when the notorious Dennis gang, lured by the promise of an easy score, sweeps in to rob the local bank. This ordinarily peaceful town, under the protection of the aging marshal, Pete MacKay, is unprepared for such a calamity. Amidst the townsfolk, Jack Wright, a humble storekeeper, his wife Martha, and brother-in-law Wally live an uncomplicated life, their existence intertwined with the rhythm of the small town. However, fate takes a sinister turn when the bank heist goes awry, leaving a bank teller and the good marshal dead. In the ensuing chaos, Jack Wright, with an inexplicable stroke of courage - or sheer luck - picks up the fallen marshal's gun and shoots down the fleeing robber, Alvin Dennis, from a staggering distance. George Henderson, another town resident, seals Alvin's fate with a shotgun blast. As the dust settles, the town recovers its stolen fortune and Jack and George emerge, rather reluctantly, as the unlikely heroes of Plainview. Their unlikely feat of heroism captures the fascination of the press, with the Amarillo Express painting a vivid tale of their courage. But the glory is short-lived as the surviving members of the Dennis gang, infuriated by their leader's death, vow to exact their revenge. Faced with the town's growing paranoia and the citizens' committee urging him to abandon his home and store, Jack Wright stands resolute.
