Plot

In the chilling heart of the 1950s Cold War, a high-stakes chess game is being played between America and her allies, and the USSR with its satellite states. The stage is set when Hungary, a puppet of the Soviets, accuses an American named Anderson of espionage. The show trial, broadcast across the globe, becomes a propaganda tool to paint America as an aggressive imperialist threat. From the Paris office of the New York Herald-Tribune, editor-in-chief Nick Strang, along with his ace reporters Jeanne Moray, a Frenchwoman, and American Jimmy Race, navigate through the fog of censored news from the Hungarian trial. The duo is assigned to probe the Hungarian ambassador in Paris, unwittingly becoming targets of a clandestine following by Hungarian agents. Jeanne's previous investigation in Budapest had uncovered a potential secret alliance between Hungary and Yugoslavia's President Bros Tito, a clear violation of Soviet policy. This revelation could plunge the Hungarian leadership into hot water with the Kremlin, making Jeanne a person of interest for the Hungarian agents. It also hints at the possibility that the publicized trial against Anderson might be a retaliatory smokescreen. The political tension amplifies when Anderson's trial ends with a sentence of 20 years hard labor, and the Hungarian leadership declares a death sentence for the next American spy caught. Their interest also lies in tracking down Gabor Chechi, a Hungarian defector believed to be hiding somewhere in France, with the suspicion that Jeanne might hold the clue to his whereabouts. When their Budapest correspondent, Barker, collapses from a heart attack, Nick sends Jimmy to Budapest to take his place. Upon his arrival, Jimmy plunges headfirst into a waking nightmare. The plot of "Assignment: Paris" unravels in a tense, thrilling narrative of political intrigue, espionage, and the relentless pursuit of truth amidst a world on the brink of chaos.
