In the arid landscape near the Dead Sea, a shocking discovery is made at an archaeological dig led by Miss Quinton (Hayley Mills). Emily Boynton (Piper Laurie), a domineering matriarch and former prison wardress, is found lifeless, stirring a whirlwind of suspicion. A woman of irritable temperament and merciless control, Emily has a knack for ruffling feathers, particularly those of Lady Westholme (Lauren Bacall), an American Anglophile with ties to the British government, and of her own family, consisting of her three adult stepchildren and her daughter, Ginevra (Amber Bezer).
Emily had masterminded a scheme, blackmailing the family attorney, Jefferson Cope (David Soul), into eradicating her late husband's will, a document that would have freed her stepchildren from her iron grip. With the will obliterated, Emily ensures she is the sole heir to the family fortune. This cunning move sets the stage for a family vacation fraught with tension and resentment, a journey that takes them from Europe to the Holy Land.
In Jerusalem, the renowned detective Hercule Poirot (Sir Peter Ustinov) crosses paths with this dysfunctional family. Poirot, a long-time friend of the love-struck Dr. Sarah King (Jenny Seagrove), who has fallen for Raymond Boynton (John Terleskey) against Emily's wishes, ingratiates himself into their midst. As Emily's ruthless behavior continues to alienate those around her, word of the destroyed will begins to circulate, breeding an atmosphere thick with animosity.
Upon Emily's untimely demise, suspected to be a result of poisoning, Poirot finds himself in the eye of the storm. Encouraged by his friend, Colonel Carbury (Sir John Gielgud), Poirot embarks on a quest to unravel this complex web of familial ties, hidden motives, and suppressed resentments. As he delves deeper, the question lingers — with so many potential suspects, who had the most compelling reason to orchestrate this deadly appointment with death?
