In the aftermath of his successful television biography, "The Naked Civil Servant," the eloquent and flamboyant Quentin Crisp (Sir John Hurt) is summoned to America, drawn by the allure of a lecture on the art of happiness. As he immerses himself in the tantalizingly liberal aura of New York City, Crisp finds a new home, a sanctuary where his eccentricities are celebrated, not scorned. Through his agent, Connie Clausen (Swoosie Kurtz), he secures an intriguing role as a "resident alien," penning film critiques and doling out his unique brand of wisdom. Yet, in a world that ebbs and flows with trends, Crisp remains an unwavering figure. His offhand remarks on A.I.D.S, described as a mere "fad," are intended as a deflection of heterosexual animosity, but they instead incite the ire of many within the gay community. His popularity wanes, but a chance encounter with the A.I.D.S-afflicted artist Patrick Angus (Jonathan Tucker) sparks a resurgence. Helping the young artist gain recognition for his work, Crisp returns to the spotlight, his sharp cynicism now a prized commodity, artfully marketed by performance artist Penny Arcade (Cynthia Nixon). Though declining health prevents him from embarking on an English lecture tour, Crisp's story culminates with a spirited final appearance at a gay club in Tampa. The film concludes with a poignant note, revealing Crisp's passing at the age of ninety-one, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, audacity, and unapologetic individuality.
