Amber Alert (2016)

Detective Amber Cross, a crisis situation negotiator with the Hartford Police Department, finds herself wedged between her professional duty and a crumbling personal life. As she navigates a bitter divorce from Edward Cross, an unemployed stay-at-home dad, their eleven-year-old son Oliver is caught in the emotional crossfire. The tension is further escalated by Amber's boss and Edward's father, who views Amber's dangerous job from the perspective of a worried grandparent. Amber's latest challenge arrives in the form of Callum McGill, a twenty-year-old with mental health issues who has hijacked a school bus holding ten children hostage from Oliver's school. Callum, trapped in a fortified warehouse with the frightened children, demands a ransom of exactly $743,368 to be paid by American Imperial Insurance by 1500h, or he threatens to kill the hostages. Amber discovers that the specific ransom amount is the sum denied by the insurance company for Callum's mother Julia's medical bills, who is battling a rare form of cancer. The insurance denial has plunged them into financial devastation. As Amber delves deeper, she realizes that Callum is not only intelligent but has meticulously planned this act of desperation. This alarming situation puts Amber at odds with Hamilton, the SWAT team leader, as their approaches to the crisis clash, often placing Chief Cross in the middle of their dispute. Their animosity seems to have manifested recently, adding another layer to the complex situation.
