Plot

In the throes of 1940, amidst the throbbing heart of war-torn Germany, the promising life of Hans Quangel (Louis Hofmann), a young German soldier, is snuffed out on the battlefields of the French campaign. The crushing news shatters the world of his parents, Otto (Brendan Gleeson) and Anna (Dame Emma Thompson), their grief an aberration in the euphoric tide that sweeps Germany following its victory. Their heartache crystallizes into a damning realization - that the architect of their despair is none other than Adolf Hitler and his ruthless Nazi regime. Unable to sit idle under the weight of this truth, Otto embarks on a silent rebellion, pouring his dissent onto handwritten cards that expose the regime's festering lies and horrors. These cards, strewn covertly across Berlin, become whispers of defiance in the deafening roar of Nazi propaganda. Despite Anna's initial resistance, she finds herself drawn to Otto's audacious pursuit, becoming an indispensable ally in his clandestine resistance. As their subversive messages proliferate over time, the relentless Police Detective Escherich (Daniel Brühl) is set on their trail, prodded by his S.S superiors demanding an arrest for this act of "treason", irrespective of actual culpability. With the shadow of Nazi Germany's impending downfall looming overhead, Otto and Anna's resolve hardens, their tenacity to unveil the truth undeterred by the escalating stakes. Even as their adversaries lie in wait for a fatal slip-up that could spell their end, their spirit of rebellion remains unquenched in "Alone in Berlin" (2016).
