Plot

In the vibrant tapestry of life, Amber Appleton (Auli'i Cravalho) stands as a beacon of hope, her spirit unbroken despite the turmoil brewing beneath her cheerful facade. This talented high school student, blessed with a musical prowess that fuels her dreams of studying at Carnegie Mellon, expertly juggles her passion for her cherished drama club, guided by the inspiring Mr. Franks (Fred Armisen), and her demanding job at a local donut shop, a necessity in her bid to support her struggling single mother (Justina Machado). Her story also weaves through the tranquil halls of a neighborhood retirement home where she showers affection on her favorite resident, a curmudgeonly senior (Carol Burnett) who, despite her pessimism, can't help but be touched by Amber's relentless optimism. But when life throws her a curveball that threatens to shatter her aspirations, Amber is forced to draw strength from her self-made family, navigating the choppy waters of adversity to keep her dreams alive.
