Plot

In the bustling heartland of Cleveland, Ohio, the prodigal son Berry-Berry Willart (Warren Beatty) has fled his roots, seeking refuge from his domineering mother Annabell (Dame Angela Lansbury) and his alcoholic father Ralph (Karl Malden). Berry-Berry, a good-looking young man, has a penchant for taking shortcuts, often exploiting his charm to beguile women who are all too willing to fall for his facade. His parents, particularly Annabell, are blinded by his charm, unable to see the flawed man behind their son's dashing exterior. Meanwhile, his younger brother, the bright and impressionable Clinton Willart (Brandon De Wilde), worships him. As fate would have it, Berry-Berry's path leads him back to Cleveland, an unplanned return unbeknownst to his family whose lives are already in turmoil. His homecoming coincides with the arrival of a family friend, the enchanting Echo O'Brien (Eva Marie Saint), who captivates Berry-Berry at first sight. Despite his own feelings for Echo, Clinton, who shares a deep bond with her, gives his brother his blessing, inwardly fearing that Echo may become just another casualty of Berry-Berry's string of abused women. Berry-Berry's new love affair ignites a firestorm within his already volatile family. Ralph and Annabell, already locked in constant conflict, find their disputes reaching fever pitch over their son's latest romantic entanglement. As Berry-Berry navigates this tumultuous love affair with the older Echo, he unwittingly stokes the flames of familial discord, setting the stage for a dramatic, emotional showdown.
