Plot

In the tumultuous heart of 1916 Russia, Agony: The Life and Death of Rasputin unveils the convoluted tale of a Siberian monk whose mystical allure and strategic cunning bring an empire to its knees. Hailed as a deity by the devout Czarina and deemed a puppeteer by the indecisive Czar Nicholas, Rasputin’s influence proves both intoxicating and destructive. His eerie sway over the royal court allows him to maneuver the Czar's interactions with the Duma, manipulate the appointment of a new premier, and exploit the vulnerable for his own ominous desires. When Rasputin's audacious assault on a baroness incites her husband's imprisonment, the lady is forced into a sacrificial bargain, trading her dignity for her spouse's freedom. Despite the Czar's attempt to banish this unsettling figure from St. Petersburg, Rasputin's grip remains unyielding. In a frenzied trance, he infiltrates the palace, persuading the Czar into a catastrophic war strategy that threatens to upend the nation. As Rasputin's ascension to power deepens, so too does his descent into debauchery and madness, a chilling transformation that ultimately culminates in a gruesome end. A coalition of nobles, driven to desperation by the monk's unchecked authority, orchestrates an elaborate and fatal farewell dinner, marking the last chapter in Rasputin's turbulent saga. In this vivid portrayal of power, perversion, and paranoia, Agony: The Life and Death of Rasputin explores the life of a man whose ominous shadow forever haunts the annals of Russian history.
