Plot

At the apex of the Cold War in 1964, the world finds itself ensnared in a tangle of political tension. Countries like Canada are precariously poised in the middle, teetering between the polar extremes of the United States and the Soviet Union. At the heart of this geopolitical maelstrom is James Watkins, the Canadian Ambassador to the Soviet Union. A personal friend to the esteemed Canadian Prime Minister and Nobel Laureate Lester B. Pearson, Watkins is seen by many as the man in the shadows, his presence in the position a result of friendship rather than personal ambition. The CIA, however, views Watkins through a lens of suspicion, firmly believing that he is a pawn in the Soviets' game. Despite their lack of definitive proof, they are determined to convince the RCMP of Watkins' dubious affiliations. The urgency and pressure from the Americans puts Canada in a tight spot, igniting a complex web of internal conflicts within the Canadian authority. Inspector David Present, heading the RCMP's KGB desk, demands concrete evidence from the CIA before making a move against Watkins. His superior, Director General Inspector Chris Hayden, promises a tempting promotion to Inspector Diane Fletcher, tasking her with the mission to arrest and convict Watkins before he slips through their fingers. Meanwhile, Diane's brother Murray Fletcher, an External Affairs official, stands among a group loyal to Prime Minister Pearson, adamantly denying Watkins' alleged betrayal. However, they realize the political liability Watkins poses to Pearson's forthcoming election campaign. Their ideal solution is a quiet retirement for Watkins, hoping to whisk him off Canadian soil before the CIA and RCMP can react. Based on Ian Adams' novel, this intricate tale of espionage and counter-espionage unfurls, focusing on the mysterious circumstances surrounding Watkins' ultimate fate. Kidnapped and interrogated by the RCMP at the behest of the CIA, Watkins' story takes a dark turn, culminating in his unexpected death. With the official obituary attributing his demise to a heart attack during a farewell supper, questions linger, painting a vivid picture of a man caught in a web of international intrigue and personal allegiances. As the pieces move on this global chessboard, the truth about Watkins remains an enigma, obscured by the fog of the Cold War.
