Plot

In the tranquil world of the British upper class, the unthinkable happens. Reverend Babbington, a man of peace, chokes to death at a cocktail party hosted by the renowned actor, Sir Charles Cartwright. His demise, initially deemed natural, sends a ripple of unease among the attendees. However, when eminent doctor and friend of Cartwright, Sir Bartholomew Strange, succumbs to a similar fate at a distant dinner party, the tragic coincidence gives way to a sinister realization. A lethal thread weaves these two deaths together, and the renowned detective Poirot, with Cartwright at his side, steps in to unravel it. Investigating the shadowy corners of the case, Poirot and Superintendent Crossfield are drawn to a mysterious butler bearing a distinctive birthmark on his wrist. This elusive character, who appears to share an unspoken jest with the late doctor, has vanished without a trace. His disappearance, coupled with a third death - a sanatorium patient who had penned a letter to Poirot, brings the investigation to a crucial juncture. A dangerous secret lurks beneath these deaths, threatening to strike again if not unearthed soon. The objective becomes clear: to identify the enigmatic butler, known only as Ellis, who served at Strange's dinner and now seems to have evaporated into thin air. As Poirot delves deeper, he uncovers a twisted plot, where every sip and every smile could be fraught with deadly intent. The question arises - who could possibly benefit from the demise of a harmless old vicar? The answer lies within the murky depths of this three-act tragedy, where poison lurks in the most innocuous places and trust is a luxury that no one can afford.
