Plot

Set against the backdrop of 1952, when homosexuality was a criminal offense, "Against the Law" chronicles the life of journalist Peter Wildeblood. His world takes an unexpected turn when he forms a clandestine connection with RAF Corporal Eddie McNally, a relationship that unfolds through secretive letters. Introducing McNally to noble companions Edward, Lord Montagu, and his cousin Michael Pitt-Rivers, the plot thickens as their private world is thrust into the public eye. The discovery of Peter's love letters to Eddie sets off a chain of events leading to their arrest, with a subsequent trial that sees them incarcerated. The narrative takes a twist as McNally and Johnny Reynolds, another young man from their circle, are offered immunity, but only if they bear witness against their friends. Imprisoned and isolated, Peter learns about the Wolfenden Committee, an organization striving to change the laws that have led to the persecution of gay men. Upon release, Peter courageously steps forward, contributing evidence and insight to the committee's noble cause. However, the path to change is long and arduous, and it takes a decade for homosexuality to be decriminalized. The film weaves in interviews with elderly gay men, survivors who, like Peter, faced discrimination in the mid-20th century. Mirroring the 2007 Channel 4 treatment of the same case, "A Very British Sex Scandal," "Against the Law" paints a poignant picture of love, law, and the fight for acceptance in a time of widespread intolerance.
