Plot

In the gripping narrative of Achanak (1973), the accomplished Dr. Chaudhary finds himself at the epicenter of a moral and medical quandary, tasked with performing intricate surgeries on the severely wounded Major Ranjeet Khanna. The Major, a highly-respected army officer, finds himself on the precipice of death and sanity, after being shot by the Police in an attempted escape from custody. His crime: the cold-blooded murder of his wife, Pushpa, and her clandestine lover, Prakash. As the scalpel hovers over the Major's life, so does the specter of his impending execution, a sentence handed down for his heinous act. The chances of survival are razor-thin, with the grim alternatives being mental instability or paralysis. Yet, even if Dr. Chaudhary manages to pull the Major back from the icy grip of death, his efforts may prove futile in the face of the gallows that inexorably await Khanna. Simultaneously, the narrative peels back the layers of the past, plunging into a series of flashbacks that replay the tragic events leading up to the Major's drastic fall from grace. Unveiling a tale of a respected officer's descent into a murderer, Achanak interweaves the tense medical drama with a haunting exploration of human frailty and fallibility.
