Plot

In the quaint seaside town of Seaburgh, Norfolk, an eager amateur archaeologist, Mr. Paxton, portrayed by Peter Vaughan, embarks on a mysterious quest. His fascination is stirred by an age-old Anglo-Saxon legend about three mythical crowns, said to safeguard England from impending invasions. Two of these revered relics have been lost to the brutalities of war and the unforgiving sea, but whispers of the third crown's existence persist, believed to be concealed somewhere in the vicinity of Seaburgh. Securing a room in a local inn, Paxton finds himself amidst the locals' wary gazes, unraveling a tale of a fellow archaeologist whose pursuit of the crown ended in his untimely death a decade prior. His curiosity is further piqued by an intriguing character, the late William Ager— a man whose lineage allegedly bore the responsibility of guarding the elusive crown. Venturing into the nearby woods once harbored by Ager, Paxton initiates his search. But as he delves deeper, he discovers that the soil of Seaburgh holds secrets far more profound and chilling than the mere location of the fabled crown.
