Plot

In the sophisticated landscape of Lake Como, Miss Bentley, a woman of charm and grace, has been a loyal patron of an elegant hillside villa every April for the past 16 years. This year, however, 1937, carries a melancholic note for her as she mourns her father, a well-known London society artist. The tranquility of her usual retreat is disrupted by the arrival of the boisterous American guests, the only other English-speaking visitors. Among the new faces is Major Wilshaw, a distinguished gentleman whose interest in Miss Bentley is kindled subtly. However, an unforeseen incident sees Miss Bentley unintentionally snubbing the Major's advances as she aids the new nanny of a local Italian family. This seemingly inconsequential moment sparks a chain of events that brings Miss Bentley, the Major, and the young and flirtatious American, Miss Beaumont into a complex dance of attraction and rivalry. Miss Beaumont, an audacious beauty who has bid adieu to her Swiss finishing school, finds amusement in her flirtation with the Major, igniting a spark in him that has been dormant since the great war. Meanwhile, the previously overlooked Major becomes an object of intrigue for Miss Bentley, who discovers there's more to him than meets the eye. Caught in the whirlwind of unexpected attractions and playful manipulations, the mischievous Miss Bentley devises an audacious plan to win the Major's heart. Amid the stunning vistas of Lake Como, "A Month by the Lake" unfolds as an enchanting tale of romance, rivalry, and the surprising turns that life can take, all against the backdrop of a world on the brink of change.
