A Month by the Lake (1995)

In the sophisticated landscape of Lake Como, Miss Bentley, a woman of charm and grace, has been a loyal patron of an elegant hillside villa every April for the past 16 years. This year, however, 1937, carries a melancholic note for her as she mourns her father, a well-known London society artist. The tranquility of her usual retreat is disrupted by the arrival of the boisterous American guests, the only other English-speaking visitors. Among the new faces is Major Wilshaw, a distinguished gentleman whose interest in Miss Bentley is kindled subtly. However, an unforeseen incident sees Miss Bentley unintentionally snubbing the Major's advances as she aids the new nanny of a local Italian family. This seemingly inconsequential moment sparks a chain of events that brings Miss Bentley, the Major, and the young and flirtatious American, Miss Beaumont into a complex dance of attraction and rivalry.
