In the bleak winter of 1971, the tranquility of New Jersey was shattered when John List brutally murdered his wife, mother, and three children before vanishing without leaving any trace of his existence. Fast-forward to eighteen years later, deep in the heart of a sleepy Virginia town, a young girl named Stephanie Hancock finds herself housebound, nursing a fractured leg. As boredom sets in, she amuses herself by keenly observing the daily lives of her neighbors. However, the harmless diversion swiftly turns sinister as Stephanie grows suspicious about the true identity of her neighbor, Bob Clark. The friendly, ordinary man bears an uncanny resemblance to the long-lost murderer, John List. Despite the years that have passed and his transformed appearance, Stephanie finds herself entangled in a web of dread and suspicion. Her attempts to convince her family about Clark's dark past prove fruitless, as they are beguiled by his friendly facade. Undeterred, Stephanie enlists the help of her boyfriend, Danny, and her loyal best friend, Melissa, resolute in her mission to reveal the monster hiding behind the neighborly smile. As they delve deeper into their investigation, they unwittingly stir the dormant beast. Their innocent curiosity morphs into a chilling game of cat and mouse when they realize the fugitive killer is aware he's under surveillance. The young trio quickly learns they have bitten off more than they can chew, as they face the chilling reality of having a potential murderer living next door.
