Plot

As the calendar pages flutter towards the end of December, Ebenezer Scrooge (Sir Michael Hordern), a man of hardened heart and tightfisted nature, finds himself at odds with the warm spirit of the season. The very mention of Christmas kindles a disdainful fire in him, and he dismisses it all as 'humbug'. He scoffs at his nephew's passionate defense of the holiday's inherent kindness, dismisses his loyal servant Bob Cratchit's (Clive Merrison) plea for a day's respite, and turns a blind eye to the plight of the poverty-stricken by refusing the collectors of alms. Casting a long shadow over the festive period is the death of his former compatriot Jacob Marley (John Le Mesurier), which occurred seven years prior, during the very same season. When Scrooge finds himself alone in his cold, dark mansion, he begins to see traces of Marley everywhere - in the door handle, a tile, even the sudden tolling of a bell. Scrooge dismisses these eerie occurrences as mere humbug, until Marley's ghost materializes, bearing a stark warning and a chance at redemption. Scrooge is informed of the impending visit of three spectral entities: the Ghost of Christmas Past (Patricia Quinn), the Ghost of Christmas Present (Bernard Lee), and the Ghost of Christmas Future (Michael Mulcaster). These spirits hold the power to alter Scrooge's life path, but will he heed their messages or remain ensnared in his own misery? In this 1977 adaptation of 'A Christmas Carol', Scrooge's journey from bitter miser to reformed soul is depicted in a manner that's as chilling as it is heartwarming.
