A Breed Apart (1984)

In the heart of a secluded island, Jim Malden (Rutger Hauer), a battle-scarred Vietnam veteran grieving the loss of his family, finds solace amongst the rare avian inhabitants. His life of isolation is punctuated by only two human connections: Stella Clayton (Kathleen Turner), the proprietress of a humble mainland supply store, and her inquisitive son Adam (Andy Fenwick). Suddenly, their tranquil existence is disrupted by the arrival of Mike Walker (Powers Boothe), a mountain climber with a hidden agenda. Professing an interest in observing the island's rare eagles, Mike conceals his true mission: he's been contracted by an unscrupulous egg collector to seize the precious eggs of these majestic birds. As the plot thickens, Mike unwittingly becomes the catalyst for an unexpected bond between the solitary Jim and the resilient Stella. Faced with the ultimate choice, Mike finds himself in a dilemma, torn between his mission and the profound influence of Jim. Confronted by his own humanity, he is compelled to make a decision that could alter the fate of this remote island sanctuary forever.
