In the quaint town of Norwich, on the cusp of their 45th wedding anniversary, Kate (Charlotte Rampling) and Geoff Mercer (Sir Tom Courtenay) are poised to commemorate their enduring love amidst a crowd of dear friends. The celebratory air, however, is pierced by the arrival of an unexpected letter that sends ripples through the calm water of their shared life. Geoff, visibly unsettled, attempts to conceal the letter's content, but curiosity compels Kate to probe further. In this moment, Geoff unravels a half-century-old secret: the discovery of his first profound love, Katya, whose life was abruptly snuffed out in the icy grasp of the Alps fifty years prior. Her body, preserved in time by the glacier, is now revealed, thrusting Geoff into a whirlwind of past emotions. This revelation triggers a shift in Geoff's demeanor, introducing an alien behavior that leaves Kate questioning the man she pledged her life to 45 years ago.
