Plot

Engulfed in the smoky shadows of 1987 Romania, under the iron fist of the brutal Ceausescu communist regime, we plunge into the lives of Gabita Dragut and Otilia Mihartescu. These two young women, bound by their shared experiences in a coed dormitory, face an intense crucible that threatens to shatter their friendship and test their courage. In this oppressive world, where birth control is a banned concept and abortion a capital crime, Gabita finds herself carrying an unwanted pregnancy. As desperation gnaws at her, she turns to her steadfast friend and roommate, Otilia, for help in orchestrating an illegal termination. Their clandestine quest for freedom from Gabita's burden leads them to Mr. Bebe, an enigmatic and uninvited male abortionist, recommended by a mutual friend. Gabita, caught in the throes of fear and guilt, becomes increasingly dependent on Otilia, who finds herself shouldering the responsibilities of this dangerous mission. From nervously dialing Mr. Bebe's number to securing a room at the Unirea hotel, Otilia finds herself entangled in a web of deception, fear, and moral quandaries. The suffocating atmosphere of secrecy is further intensified as they navigate a maze of potential risks. Every step of their journey is fraught with danger, from surrendering their IDs at the hotel reception to the procurement of illicit goods intended for bribery. Meanwhile, the clock ticks relentlessly, adding pressure to Otilia's already strained shoulders. Her bourgeois boyfriend, Adi, unaware of the unfolding drama, insists on her presence at his mother's birthday dinner. As the day unfurls, the friendship between Gabita and Otilia is strained to breaking point. Otilia is forced to question the lengths she is willing to go for her friend, while also reflecting on her relationship with Adi. This tale of two women, trapped in the twilight years of a repressive dictatorship, paints a stark socio-political critique, enveloped in the bleakness of their predicament.
