In a world unseen by most, Kimihiro Watanuki, an ordinary high-school student, finds himself tormented by spectral apparitions and fantastical creatures, drawn to him by some inexplicable magnetism. These creatures, however, are invisible to everyone but Watanuki. His life takes an unexpected turn when he inadvertently steps into a mysterious shop that specializes in granting wishes. Here, he meets Yuko Ichihara, an enchanting witch with an uncanny knowledge of the universe's secrets. Yuko, ever the opportunist, offers Watanuki a tantalizing deal - she will rid him of his spectral tormentors, but every magic comes with a price. She perceives in Watanuki a tenacious spirit and a knack for hard work, and thus, she has him toil away at her whims, doing housework and an array of chores. This is his repayment, working off the substantial energy required to fulfill his wish. Thus, begins an unusual tale of magic, labor, and the peculiarities of a hidden world, as Watanuki navigates the trials of his new life, caught in the enchanting web of Yuko's magical shop.
