Plot

In the turbulent year of 1936, the charming Sir Hallam Holland (Ed Stoppard) and his enchanting young wife, Lady Agnes (Keeley Hawes), return to England from an overseas diplomatic mission. They settle into the grand yet long-deserted 165 Eaton Place, a house echoing with the memories of its previous occupants, the Bellamy family. Fate intertwines their lives with Rose Buck (Jean Marsh), a faithful servant of the Bellamy family, who they engage to assemble a competent domestic staff. Rose, eventually stepping into the role of housekeeper, becomes the linchpin between the upstairs and downstairs worlds. England, in these years, is a nation grappling with the aftermath of the Depression, its scars visible in the form of widespread unemployment. The ideological storm of Fascism, gaining momentum in Italy and Germany, begins to cast its ominous shadow over the U.K., finding a foothold in Oswald Mosely's British Union of Fascists. Amidst these brewing societal tensions, the newly formed staff at Eaton Place navigate their everyday tasks, gradually knitting together to form a unique downstairs family. Their stories intertwine with those of their employers, painting a vivid picture of life in a period of immense change.
