Dr. Joel Fleischman, portrayed by Rob Morrow, is a quintessential New Yorker and newly minted doctor, whose life takes an unexpected detour when he's contractually bound to a four-year service in the frosty frontier of Alaska. Having overlooked the finer details in his scholarship agreement, he finds himself in Cicely, a quirky, off-the-map town of 214 inhabitants, far removed from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan. Cicely, Alaska, a seemingly sleepy settlement, is a tapestry of eccentric characters who welcome the reluctant Dr. Fleischman with open arms. The town boasts an eclectic mix of individuals, from Maurice J. Minnifield (Barry Corbin), a wealthy former astronaut and town benefactor, to the headstrong pilot Maggie O'Connell (Janine Turner) and Holling Vincoeur (John Cullum), the affable mayor and saloon owner. Other intriguing personalities include the sweetly naive Shelly Marie Tambo (Cynthia Geary), Holling's waitress girlfriend; the introspective ex-con and disc jockey Chris Stevens (John Corbett); Joel’s patient and almost silent receptionist Marilyn Whirlwind (Elaine Miles); the benevolent store owner Ruth-Anne Miller (Peg Phillips); and Ed Chigliak (Darren E. Burrows), a young man with an unusual fondness for films. Each day in Cicely uncovers a new layer of the town's charm and presents a fresh set of challenges for Dr. Fleischman. As he navigates through the peculiarities of the town and its people, there's an undeniable hint that he might be growing fonder of this unusual Alaskan retreat than he would dare to admit.
