Marianne and Connell go to secondary school together, and later end up at Trinity College Dublin. Their relationship is multi-faceted, and they are almost opposites: Marianne is quirky and comes from a modest family, while Connell is wealthy and well educated. Initially being silent when Marianne is bullied, things get complicated when they take their relationship to the next level.
