In the shadow of World War II, on the 8th of October 1941, a clandestine command echoed from the lips of Stalin, birthing an unparalleled female aviation unit. This unit, later to be christened the 46th "Taman" Guards Night Bomber Aviation Regiment, wove a mesmerizing tale of resilience and bravery starting from the barren landscapes of the Salsk Steppes, through the horrific Don battles, and culminating in the heart of Nazi Germany. At the helm of their PO-2 night bombers, endearingly known as 'mules', these courageous women soared through darkness, their bombs raining destruction upon enemy fortifications, machinery, and manpower. Their strategic strikes crippled river crossings, reducing the enemy's defenses to rubble. The regiment's war record was extraordinary: over 23,000 sorties flown, roughly 3,000 tons of bombs dropped, and each pilot clocking in over 1000 missions by the end of the war. The 46th Regiment emerged as the most highly decorated female unit in the Soviet Air Force, with twenty-three pilots receiving the illustrious 'Hero of the Soviet Union' award. Their audacity and prowess were no less than their male compatriots, leading the Germans to dread them as 'Nachthexen' or 'Night Witches'. The TV show 'Night Swallows' is a thrilling homage to these unsung heroines, their untold stories of valor and their indomitable spirit in the face of adversity.
