Plot
Rolling Stone reporter Evan Wright embedded alongside a recon marine squad during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. This is their story. 1st Marine Reconnaissance Battalion represented some of the most highly trained soldiers in the U.S. military, but they're largely ordinary kids from regular upbringings. Their transition to being in the middle of the war is a jarring one, and their mix of profound compassion and callous indifference to the situation around them frame the confusion of our role there. They may be following orders, but they find themselves on an increasingly aimless journey with a destination that seems increasingly ambiguous.
